We have a new warbucket radio show for you all to listen to. It's a bit different than usual this week as we have four people talking instead of just me or just me and CanadianMonkey.

- complex tells us about his hot sister
- lego goes to jail
- sh0t narrowly avoids killing a man

and a few other things!

Oh look, news.
Posted on 23-Feb-2008 | 05:41:07 PM

It turns out that the weighted companion cube was inspired by declassified interrogation manuals. How about that.

The latest Warbucket Radio will be airing tonight at 12AM EST and CanadianMonk3y joins me for a rousing discussion of brain eating and flesh devouring.

There's a new Zombie Panic patch out which includes some new maps and new black cop (see: Dawn of the Dead remake). Our official warbucket Zombie Panic thread can be found here.

There is no new Avatar this week.

fuck off

Edit: For those who don't listen to the shoutcast here is your archive version

Edit 2: Links may not work correctly unless you go here:

Warbucket Radio III
Posted on 16-Feb-2008 | 05:27:55 PM

This time we'll be streaming it via the shoutcast server. Using the media player of your choice (assuming it isn't shit) you will open the following location at approximately 12:00 AM EST tonight:

radio.warbucket.com:8000/listen.pls

If you want to start listening early spikedcereal is playing music and I'll be taking over at 11:30 and playing some various things for that thirty minutes. After WB Radio there's an hour long independent news show that I think you guys might enjoy. Let me know in the thread if you do and I'll include it each week.

Carry on.

Edit: Oh yeah, I call the vasari ship the wrong name sorry nerdy friends.

Edit #2: WMP will not play this stream apparently. Don't use it.

Show can be downloaded here.

Warhammer Online beta
Posted on 11-Feb-2008 | 06:56:57 AM

I'm not in it, but I get to play it. If I was in the beta talking about it would get me kicked out. I'd post SS's but that might get the person who's beta I'm leeching off of in trouble.

I want to start by saying this game has some serious, serious, potential. Most notably in the public quests. A public quest is set in a certain area and anyone who enters is automatically working together. The public quests all have stages, and when they are done, your participation get added to a random roll, and the top players for the quest get a really good loot drop. You can do the public quests as many times as you want, and they provide both good exp and tons of influence (reputation) which gets you even better rewards (which cost nothing but the influence). I know what you're thinking, but it's really easy to get lots of influence, and doesn't take eleventy billion years like the WoW rep-grind.

Past the public quests, you get your typical WoW "go here and kill x for y" quests from NPCs. These so far have had nothing to do with killing random boars, and are all a quest to fight the NPC Chaos/empire in your zone. On the empire side, you're thrust into fighting chaos from moment 0. There's no more bullshit in finding where quests are either, the quest zones are nicely labeled on the area and mini map, and the area in which you need to go is outlined in both as well.

In general the mobs are weaker than WoW, letting you dispatch three or four at a time without much a problem. Downtime is virtually non-existent as you regen both health and action points (no mana in this game, AP's work like a rogue's energy bar, different classes have other resource mechanics specifically for them) very quickly. As such leveling is quite fast, and things are geared towards you getting in PvP in a hurry where the game goes from awesome to hell-awesome.

Right now you're only allowed to touch Chaos and Empire. You have access to the melee DPS classes (marauder and witch hunter), the chosen tank, the bright mage ranged DPS for empire, and both support/healer classes (warrior priest/zealot).

The chosen is a beefy mother fucker. You do not do a lot of damage, but it's enough to solo around easily. You are however, a giant awesome damage sponge. I mean it takes a considerable effort to knock out a chosen, and a chosen line with good zealots on duty is going to be nigh impossible to drop.

Witch hunters play like rogues. You build up combo point (accusations) and then use them to do an execution (finishing move). You get a back stab, but instead of the stealth mechanics you're tossed a pistol. You get some neato pistol tricks, and the whole idea of the class is that you beat the shit out of your enemy and denounce him as a heretic, before capping him with a bullet in the brain. Unlock the WoW rogue, you don't lose CP's after a fight, but they slowly dwindle. CP's are also not specific to one target, so you could build them up on a tank, and then use an execution on a healer.

The marauder is the counter-part to the witch hunter as the melee DPS chaos class. You are able to morph one of your arms into a variety of weapons to fit different situations. As a marauder slaughters people he gets more and more berserk, making it easier to keep murdering people. The dynamic is: DPS, get pissed, do more dps, get more pissed, do more DPS etc. They're fun.

Zealots are a healer/nuker. You sit back and you blast enemies with nukes, and do good damage with them. What makes them neat is their healing mechanics. You don't target a friendly and mash buttan, you have spells that either debuff or hurt an enemy, and when you cast them, you heal or buff an ally. In this game you're allowed to target both one enemy and one ally at the same time. So to heal Max the chosen, you'd target Max, and target the enemy he's fighting. You nuke/debuff the enemy, and at the same time your spell heals/buffs Max. You have to be in combat nuking to do your job, and your nukes are deadly.

Warriors priests right now are my favorite thing to play. In addition to your action points to do moves you have a righteous fury gauge. It starts at 500 and will recharge when out of combat. As you cast heals, it diminishes, and the only way to get it back is to take your giant hammer and beat the shit out of someone. You do much better melee dps than a tank, but not as much as the witch hunter. You're also in the mid ground for damage mitigation. This dynamic is fantastic though, as to be a good healer you have to be smiting the fuck of heathens, and you're quite good at that. You also get prayers which work similar to auras.

I haven't played the bright wizard yet, but it's pretty clear what they do. Your spells either set people on fire, nuke for damage, or explode things you've already set on fire. Using them in the correct combination rapes hard, and they look like a lot of fun to play. Apparently you have some kind of magic gauge dynamic, that when it goes down too far you have a chance to go crazy and blow yourself up.

Like I said, WAR! (the new thing it's getting called) is shaping up to be pretty fucking sweet. It needs time though. Stuff bugs out a lot, and it needs more of a graphical cleanup with animations and the environment (some animations aren't even in the game yet). If they get to work on this game until say, a December release, it's going to come out swinging and be the next big internet crack. But a release earlier than like 6 months is going to produce a buggy piece of half finished shit which will flop well before it's patched to an acceptable level.

If there's anything else you faggots want to know, ask and I'll try to answer.

EA admits to ruining top-tier developers after aquiring them.
Posted on 08-Feb-2008 | 03:59:31 PM

www.joystiq.com/2008/02/08/dice-08-riccitiello-warns-against-consolidation-says-ea-blew/

EA CEO John Riccitiello took the stage during the final day of DICE to preach a doctrine of, well, basically: the exact opposite of everything EA has been doing for the past 15 years. In late 1992, EA gobbled up Origin, and then it was Bullfrog in '95, followed by Westwood in '98, and so and so forth, leading right up to the acquisition of BioWare and Pandemic Studios last October. "We at EA blew it," said Riccitiello, speaking to the woeful fates of those early, and once top-tier developers after they became part of the EA 'family.' Lesson learned, apparently.

Riccitiello highlighted "creative failure" as the most telling outcome of consolidation (Hello Activision!) and urged the industry to follow examples set by studios like Rockstar, Valve and Blizzard, who have succeeded by remaining autonomous within the corporate umbrella (Riccitiello used the analogy of "city-states"). Overall, Riccitiello's was a promising message of awareness and change from EA -- at the least, reassurance that BioWare will never be relegated to Madden duty under his watch.

---

Do you think EA will change?

People are saying they're really badly photoshopped, others swear they're legit. I suck at anything photography so I dunno, but some of them are pretty good.

Bucketeers in Space
Posted on 03-Feb-2008 | 06:30:18 PM

Some of your fellow Bucketeers are playing Masters of Orion 2 via the internets. You can read CanadianMonk3y's write up on their first game here.

There's a link to the game and instructions on how to play (in the rar) here . All the cool guys are hanging out in #moo2 on IRC to organize games. If you want to get on IRC and don't know how follow these instructions.

Also thanks to wcil for fixing the front page.
